If Jesus Had Only: A Christian Dayenu *
If Jesus had only died on the cross to take away our sins; but had not empathized with our weaknesses… it would have been enough.
If Jesus had only empathized with our weaknesses; but had not been tempted in every way, just as we are, yet without sin… it would have been enough.
If Jesus had only been tempted in every way, just as we are, yet without sin; but had not opened a new and living way for us through the curtain, that is, his body… it would have been enough.
If Jesus had only opened a new and living way for us through the curtain, that is, his body; but had not allowed us to approach God’s throne of grace with confidence to receive mercy and help in time of need… it would have been enough.
If Jesus had only allowed us to approach God’s throne of grace with confidence to receive mercy and help in time of need; but had not promised to always be with us… it would have been enough.
If Jesus had only promised to always be with us; but had not promised us eternal life… it would have been enough.
If Jesus had only promised us eternal life; but had not promised that no one would be able to snatch us out of His hand… it would have been enough.
If Jesus had only promised that no one would be able to snatch us out of His hand; but had not promised to give us rest… it would have been enough.
If Jesus had only promised to give us rest; but had not promised us His peace… it would have been enough.
If Jesus had only promised us His peace; but had not promised us His joy… it would have been enough.
If Jesus had only promised us His joy; but had not given us the Holy Spirit as our Helper… it would have been enough.
If Jesus had only given us the Holy Spirit as our Helper; but had not given us His Word… it would have been enough.
If Jesus had only given us His Word; but had not given us His Church… it would have been enough.
If Jesus had only given us His Church; but had not given us our purpose in life to glorify Him… it would have been enough.
If Jesus had only given us our purpose in life to glorify Him… it would have been enough.

* A Dayenu is a thousand year old song that is part of the Jewish Passover Seder. The Hebrew word Dayenu means “it would have been enough”. It’s a song of gratitude towards God for what He did for His people.
This is a Christian version, centered around all God has done for us through Jesus. This version starts with references to Hebrews 4:14-16, then Hebrews 10:19-20, followed by various promises Jesus made in the Gospels.
One way to use it is around a table. Each person takes turns reading one verse, and then the whole table group responds with “it would have been enough”, before going to the next. Someone then ends with a prayer.
