Can you love God without loving people?

In modern society, church has gone out of fashion for many people, even with some who identify themselves as Christians.  Some will say things like:  “Isn’t spirituality just between myself and God?” or “Why do I need to go to church to love God?”

John gives us the answer when he summarizes this about loving God:

And he has given us this command: Anyone who loves God must also love their brother and sister.” – 1 John 4:21 (NIV)

This command is blunt: Loving God includes loving God’s people.  If we’re not loving other believers in Christ, we’re not really loving God.

That may sound harsh, but the reason for this is profound. John says earlier in his Epistle that “God is Love” (1 John 4:16)  And all throughout Scripture, we learn that His love is directed towards: people!

To love God, is to be connected to God and His heart.  And since His heart is a love for people, you can’t really be connected with God without also loving people.

Many have heard that Jesus said the greatest commandment is to love God, and that the 2nd greatest commandment is to love your neighbor.  But here in John’s letter, we see how these two commandments are inter-linked.

To love God means loving people too, they go hand in hand.

Do you want to connect more with God?  Forgive that person who harmed you. Show hospitality to a stranger. Show mercy to one who owns you a debt. Get in a church family, and start receiving their love, and giving your love in return!

Watch your love for God grow as a result!
