Shortly after Winston Churchill became prime minister… he made it clear his position on the Nazi aggression:
“You ask, what is our policy? I can say: It is to wage war, by sea, land and air, with all our might and with all the strength that God can give us; to wage war against a monstrous tyranny, never surpassed in the dark, lamentable catalogue of human crime.” – Winston Churchill in the House of Commons, May 13, 1940
Later that year, across the ocean in America, FDR was reelected as president, but America was reluctant to get involved in Europe’s new war. FDR had campaigned on this reluctance as well.
But Winston Churchill pleaded with the President for help. FDR was moved by Churchill’s determination and passionate oratory, and wrote some executive orders to assist Britian, even though he said “I might get impeached”. FDR told Churchill that American would become the “great arsenal of democracy” and supply Britain with what they needed to fight.
This is a metaphor for what the Apostle Paul instructs Christians when he said “For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light” – Ephesians 5:8 (NIV)
America was a beacon of democracy. Churchill was pleading with FDR to live this way! Not to sit back, but to get involved!
In this same way spiritually, Paul is imploring Christians… you are now light in the Lord. Live as children of light.
FDR stepped up, and the effect of America joining the Allies had tremendous impact, as we know in history. Analogous to this, as Christians step up, and live as children of light now… we will have tremendous effect spiritually!
